Staying Joyful!

Fact: Life can be overwhelming. 

There are things that happen in our lives that we do not always understand and we try and try and try to wrap our minds around a particular event but it is not until we truly let go and trust God that we find pure joy, pure hope, and pure peace. 

The holiday season has seemed to sneak up on us. Honestly... where did this year go?!?! Our day to day lives have probably started to get a little more hectic and if your "to do" list is anything like mine, it is constantly growing. On top of our daily stresses we are now opening our doors for guests during the holidays, creating gift lists for family and friends, and trying to squeeze in good fellowship time with our family, friends, and co-workers. 

While reading a devotion earlier today, it directed me to Romans 15:13 and it was just what I needed to read. Life can be stressful and while everyday is always an appropriate time to reflect on His wonderful and many blessings, the holidays seem like a special time. There is joy in every situation. There is hope in every situation. And we can always find hope in Him.

Respecting The Authority 

"Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men." ~ Titus 3:1-2~

I want to talk about earthly government today. It seems only fitting since the Presidential election is in full swing and both parties have officially declared their nominee. As an American citizen, this is an exciting and overwhelming time for our communities and our country as a whole. We are so fortunate to have the freedom to be able to vote for our nation's leaders. It is a right that is so easily taken for granted but one that is so valuable and special to the United States of America. 

With voting and elections comes campaigning. Heated debates are bound to occur and politics are most likely seeping into our everyday conversations. Most of us know who we are going to vote for and many of us are vocal about our choice... that's what campaigning is all about! The freedom of speech is essential in an important event like choosing our next President of the United States of America. But as a Christian, where do we draw the line? How do we choose to voice our vote? Are we building our candidate up or tearing the opposite party down? 

I came across today's verse from Titus as I was flipping through my Bible to find my way to a verse in Hebrews... and I am so glad that this caught my eye!

"Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men." ~ Titus 3:1-2~

I was anxious to dig a little deeper about these two particular verses and my study Bible states:

*New Testament teaching is not confined to the area of personal salvation but includes much instruction about practical living. Although believers are citizens of heaven, they must also submit themselves to earthly government and help promote the well-being of their community. 

*The terms "rulers and authorities" refer to all forms and levels of human government. 

When I read this I immediately found myself focusing on some things that I have seen floating around on Facebook recently... the bashings of our current President, the bashings of his fellow nominee, horrible political cartoons, distasteful articles poking fun of our leaders. But what disappointed me the most was that these things have been posted and proudly supported by Christian men and women. Now... I am not perfect in all I do or say (that could be a WHOLE other post!) but I am a firm believer in truly supporting something that you love instead of putting down something you dislike. I've seen a banner on Pinterest that pretty much sums up these feelings:

Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate. 

I am aware that the above statement is not from the Bible but doesn't it follow some of the teachings of the Bible? As Christians, we should try to remain uplifting, positive, helpful, humble, and obedient. We should not judge or put others down- even if we do not agree with everything that they stand for. We can promote our faith and beliefs in a Godly way and that includes promoting our Presidential nominee of choice. 

Before we open our mouths or press "send" on our computers, we should take a moment and make sure that what we're saying or doing is Christ like. We need to be exercising our rights as American citizens but we need to be obedient to His Word as well. Our verse from today clearly states that we need to respect our leaders (regardless of political party!) and continue to campaign and fight for our communities but with compassion, consideration, and humility. 

I really try to not get involved in political chats, especially using social media, but seeing some of these articles and postings by fellow Christians has been extremely disappointing. I am hopeful that for the next two months we can make an intentional effort to promote our nominee in the most positive of ways and to remember Titus 3:1-2 as we deal with what is already a sticky situation... politics.

Ever Changing

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."
~Hebrews 13:8~

We are constantly in a state of change. Whether it is personally, within our marriages, our family relationships, our finances, our jobs... something in our lives are always changing. My sweet hubby and I are a few weeks out from making another big change in our lives. We're relocating... again! This upcoming move is a rush of emotions for me. I'm so excited, a little anxious, a bit nervous, and yes, a tad scared. Right when I feel like I'm getting settled where we're at, we have to pick up and start all over again. Will we like our new jobs? What will our neighbors be like? Will we make new friends? How soon will we find a church "home"? The questions are endless but one thing is set in stone and that is Jesus Christ. He is the one thing in our lives that is certain and sure. He is the same "yesterday and today and forever." He is in charge and leading us down this new path towards our new life.

Though our lives are ever changing, His love for us remains the same. He is not changing! Our God is strong. He is solid. He is our Rock. One of the meanings of the word "rock" is reliable. Isn't that just what our Almighty God is? Reliable? When we need Him most for our praises and prayers, He is there. No matter what are we going through, He is there.

God is our source of strength through all the changes that life throws our way. Ultimately I know that God is watching over us and that this move is all part of His plan. Whether I feel ready or not, I know that I can pass my feelings and emotions over to Him and He will carry this burden of mine. He is our security and safe haven during times of change and as we go about this earthly life and go through our many changes, we can rest assured that one thing will always be solid. And that is our Rock, our Savior, our God.

Stronger

"She is clothed in strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come."
~Proverbs 31:25~

After a conversation with a special lady this past week, I felt compelled and drawn to read Proverbs 31 and about the "wife of noble character." We all go through tough times when the days seem endless, our to-do lists keep growing, or we're just out of sync with our hubby. When we live in this stressful and challenging world of ours, days like the one mentioned above are bound to happen. Marriage is such a wonderful, sacred, and amazing blessing but that certainly doesn't mean that it will not present challenges.

The wife in Proverbs 31 is beyond admirable and is an incredible example of what God wants us to do within our role as a wife. She provides food and clothing for her family, she is prepared for hard times, she is up before sunrise, she helps the less fortunate, and she even buys her own land and plants a vineyard...  you get the picture! She is a busy, multitasking, hard working lady and her husband and children find wisdom in her and call her blessed. Amazing! But my favorite verse is verse 25. It shows she is strong. She is dignified. She laughs at days to come. She is free of worry. She is not anxious. She is ready for what lies ahead and welcomes any challenge that may unwrap itself in front of her. Can we relate to this? Can we describe ourself in the same manner? I'd like to think that I am a pretty easy going gal who strives to find the positive side of things throughout life but it wasn't two weeks ago that I had a breakdown in the car because I felt so overwhelmed. I was a mix of emotions and just down right stressed about changes that were happening so quickly in our lives. Great changes but nonetheless, changes.

We all have our moments. We are after all, only human. But when I read today's verse: "She is clothed in strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come", I imagine myself literally clothing myself in my armor of strength and dignity each morning and preparing for the day's tasks. I envision myself laughing and approaching the day with a carefree, positive attitude. We are women and wives of God and no matter the changes, challenges, or emotional barriers we are fighting, we can overcome them because we have God protecting and providing for us. We can clothe ourselves with His strength and fight whatever battle that we may be facing.

Proverbs 31 provides an exemplary woman to model what being a wife is all about. We are so much more that what meets the eye. We are strong, ready, and able women of God.

Biblical Wife Challenge:
As a wife, what challenge are you facing today? Write a prayer asking God for strength during this time and for Him to clothe you each day in the necessary attire to face this challenge.

Read through Proverbs 31:10-31. What stands out most to you about this noble wife? What traits do you want to implement into your own role as a wife? Share with your hubby what your desires are as a wife and what you want to provide for him. In turn, what does he want to provide for you? As a husband, what are his goals? 

Ephesians 5:22-33 offers wonderful insight on what God calls us to do in these special positions of husband and wife. It's a beautiful portrait of how our marriages should reflect Christ and His love for the church.

Working On Our Fitness

"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."
~1 Timothy 4:8~

In today's world, women are expected to be lean, toned, thin, and fit. Between celebrities and models flaunting their bodies all over our televisions and magazines, the pressure can weigh a ton when we step on that scale or look in our mirror. I am an avid supporter in leading a healthy lifestyle but I have learned that much more than just daily trips to the gym account for our overall health. My spiritual health needs to come first so that I am able to focus on the other key components that make up my overall lifestyle. Going to the gym and planning nutritious meals are certainly important, and absolutely necessary, but if we're out of shape with our relationship with God, what kind of fit, healthy lifestyle are we really leading?

I actually came across today's verse while reading a Karen Kingsbury book and it really got me thinking... I put a lot of emphasis on physical training. If I go to the gym and put in a solid workout, I automatically measure the success of my day. I went to the gym so that equals a happy, satisfied "me". If I miss a workout or eat some ice cream, I assume that my day has been a bust and guilt overwhelms and consumes me. As I'm writing this, I realize how silly that sounds but I am sure there are several women who have shared the same thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Most importantly though, I can recognize the mistake that I have been putting too much emphasis on "physical training". 

I love today's verse because it acknowledges that physical training does in fact hold some value in our lives but it ultimately reminds us of what holds all value. Leading a godly life should remain our number one priority in this life. We are to strive to put all our hope and faith in God and His teachings. We are to follow His commandments and shine our light for Him each and every day. Every time we open our Bibles to read Scripture, He is training us. Every time we are faced with a difficult situation, He is training us. When we receive incredible blessings, He is training us. While this sort of lifestyle and outlook can be trying and difficult at times, it leads to a much stronger, much fitter, much more toned spiritual health. His training prepares us for this life... and the next.

"Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well."

Biblical Wife Challenge:

I definitely urge you to keep making those trips to the gym but before heading out that door, try to make some time for God and replenish your spiritual health before working on your physical health. Before hitting the road for that long run, maybe spend some time in His Word, read your favorite devotion, or just simply pray. Let's spend this week getting our priorities back on track!

Get your hubby or beau in on the action! If you don't already work out with that handsome man of yours, try to include him in one workout this week. It's always nice to have an encouraging workout buddy and it's good bonding time!

Is It Okay to Be Proud?

"The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished."
~Proverbs 16:5~

"When pride comes then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom."
~Proverbs 11:2~

"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."
~Proverbs 16:18~

"But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble' "
~James 4:6~

"People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,"
~2 Timothy 3:2~

The subject of pride or being proud is brought up several times throughout the Bible. It is a feeling that is important that we women of the Word take seriously so that this sin does not slowly creep into our lives. I've read and re-read numerous Bible verses that speak of being proud, including those listed above, but I was also curious how the dictionary defined pride. Here is what I read:

noun- a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements

After reading this definition, I went to the thesaurus to find out what other words were similar to pride:

honor, self-respect, self-worth, fulfillment, arrogance, vanity, self-love, haughtiness, glory

No wonder pride is considered a sin! As a dance instructor and coach I have said, " I'm so proud of you!" countless times but as I dug deeper and learned more about the harmful effects of pride and being proud of our own accomplishments, I have decided to make the commitment to not use the word proud or pride in my vocabulary. Seriously!

I never ever want to come across as a woman or wife who is boastful, arrogant, or finds her fulfillment in mine or my husband's accomplishments. Our accomplishments are God's accomplishments. When I wake up in the morning that is God's accomplishment. I never want to take satisfaction in my own accomplishments. Anything that I accomplish in life, whether it be an award, completing an awesome workout, making it through a long work day, or creating a new recipe, comes from God. It is because He gave me the motivation, encouragement, and guidance to such things. All the glory belongs to Him and I never want to be mistaken for someone who tried to take credit for something I honestly did not do.

Pride is sin. Pride is self-worship. Pride is something that I never really understood until recently and it is something that I hope to carve out of my life. When my hubby was offered his new job I so badly wanted to run and jump and tell him how proud I was of him. It was difficult to not use the word but I found other ways to congratulate this wonderful happening in our lives:

"I am overwhelmed by your hard work and dedication. Thank you for all that you do!"
"Thank you Jesus for leading us to this new job and location."
"God is so good."

You may think that I have lost my marbles and that saying that you're proud of someone isn't a big deal but as I read these verses and continued deeper into what His Word says about being prideful, I just can't have anything to do with it. I want to be humble and I want to be a woman and wife who is quick to give credit to her Provider. I never want anyone to think that I am arrogant and that I believe my accomplishments were all because of me. I am a daughter of Christ and because of Him I am confident and because of Him I am encouraged to make goals and motivated to accomplish them.

Clean Your Plate!

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."
~ John 6:12 ~

This morning I discovered just how wasteful I really am. I mean... I'm a pretty wasteful person. Whether it's food, clothes, money... I can throw it away in the snap of a finger. Examples: I pulled out a dish from a meal that my hubby and I had recently shared and there was still a good serving or two left but unfortunately, we just let it sit in the fridge. Wasteful. A couple of weeks ago I discovered a bin of clothes under our bed. It was full of several shirts and pants and the majority of these items haven't been touched in 2 years. Wasteful. I have a pile of books sitting on our bookshelf because the price on Amazon was just too good to pass up. Wasteful. I'm hoping many of you can relate! And let's not even get started on how much time we can all waste. In John 6:12, Jesus clearly instructs his disciples to waste nothing. This is an instruction for us as well... waste nothing!

It is a command that I'm sure many of us tend to overlook. At times, I know I am guilty of taking the food on my table or the money in my bank account for granted. I was looking in mine and my hubby's closet the other morning and I felt disgusted by the fact that I was complaining that I had nothing to wear. I have plenty to wear and then some! I have things sitting in my closet just collecting dust. When I make that trip to Target, is it really necessary to pick up those "extra" items... every time? NO! That is money that I could put towards a much greater cause. All these little "things" add up to so much more and it is astonishing to sit here and reflect on how much "stuff" I have wasted.

Reading this verse really struck a chord with me and made me realize that I must do a better job at giving back and utilizing everything that God has blessed us with. As believers, we have the gift to reach out and share His teachings. We have the capability to show the world our beliefs and share God's goodness, but are we wasting these gifts? Are we truly taking advantage of each and every interaction and conversation to share the Lord's light? Are we truly using everything that He has given us?

There are so many people in this world who do not know the Lord or know what the Bible teaches. There are so many people who are stricken with hunger. There are so many people who do not know where their next paycheck is coming from. These thoughts are absolutely crushing but it makes me so thankful for what I do have and it makes me want to take care of and protect what I have been given. The Lord has always provided for me in some way so how in the world is it right that I'm wasting His blessings? It's not, so a change must be made. Let's not waste what the Lord has given our families. Let's not take these blessings for granted. We need to find ways to use these gifts and give back these gifts to others and share the love of the Lord with those around us.

Decisions, Decisions

"Be very careful, then, how you live- not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil."
~ Ephesians 5:15-16 ~

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
~ Jeremiah 29:11 ~

Jeremiah 29:11 has to be one of my favorite Bible verses and one that I find myself returning to time and time again. There have been several times throughout the past few years that I have felt completely and utterly overwhelmed and on the verge of a total breakdown, meltdown, or whatever going crazy is called! Since being married I certainly have not slowed down. Whether it's my job or my home life, something has always kept me busy. I enjoy being involved in 500 different activities and always like to dabble in projects that help me feel "creative". I like to expand my network base by doing extra, outside jobs, I like to fit in as much cleaning or errands as possible into one day, I want to invest myself in a Bible study, or two or three. As much as these things are all great uses of my time, I sometimes agree to things because I think it will benefit me. Me, me, me. These are things that are pleasing to me but am I pleasing God with how I'm choosing to spend my time? There have been numerous times where I have literally worn my body down to the point of being absolutely exhausted and sick; All because I was selfishly thinking of myself and what was beneficial for me.

I am so grateful that the Lord led me to my hubby because he finally turned on the light bulb inside of my head. I simply can not do everything and I can not please everyone. There are only 24 hours in a day and it is okay to say no and to not be involved in everything that I'm asked to do.

It's been awhile since I've read The Purpose Driven Life but the author, Rick Warren, poses an excellent question when it comes to deciding whether or not to agree to something.

"Does this activity help me fulfill one of God's purposes for my life?"

This seems like a fairly simple question but I find that it's not. Answering this question means feeling confident that you know your purpose and what God is calling you to do. I think we have all had times where we question what it is that we're meant to be doing in this earthly life of ours. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure that I understand what my full purpose is but I am faithful that God will continue to show me. From what God has revealed thus far, I am absolutely positive that I am here to fulfill more than one purpose. I am positive that most of us are here to serve a multitude of people and communities. Just think about all the "hats" we wear as wives and women. We're wives, Christians, chefs, boo boo fixers, daughters, sisters, workers, helpers, etc,...

My goal is to take this week and really pray and search for what my goals and purposes are at this time in my life. I want to create a mission statement for how I strive to live each day and how I plan to serve our Powerful and Almighty God. Maybe you can do the same. How do you want to represent Christ each day? What is your purpose as a wife? What goals at work and with God's help, how do you plan to reach them? Where do you feel God is leading you right now? I am a visual person and I like to have something in front me so I can really grasp its message. By writing a mission statement for what we want to accomplish, we have something tangible to refer back to and something to continue to grow from.

It can be a scary and intimidating task to go to God and search for our purpose but what an incredible thing to know that God already knows our purpose and in His timing He will reveal those precious gifts to us. We all have a purpose to contribute to those around us.

Staying Focused

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
~ Matthew 6:33~

"For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit."
~Romans 8:5~

As women and wives, our days are stacked full of constant "to do" lists. Staying on top of our work, keeping our homes somewhat presentable, cooking meals for our loved ones, keeping our hubby organized, making time to call a close friend, etc,...etc,... Our lists are constant and at times can seem never ending but isn't it such a wonderful feeling when everything is checked off our lists? It doesn't happen too often for me but when everything on that list is completed and marked off, I know that I can finally enjoy some "me" time.

When we have our alone time and can enjoy those rare moments of resting and being lazy, do we turn to God and spend those moments with Him? Or do we turn to other things like the TV and internet? I admit that I fall with the latter group. I am so quick to open up my computer and check Facebook and Twitter or log in to Pinterest and start pinning away. It's easy to click on the TV or throw in a movie to watch or curl up on the couch and read the latest book series. And while these things can be great and fun, we so easily place them higher on our priority list above spending that quiet, one on one time with God and with His Word.

I think it is so important for us to take a step back and re-evaluate how we prioritize our "extra" time. For me, this past month was absolutely hectic and was full of work and lots of traveling for work! Sometimes we don't get that coveted "me" time and our time with God can feel limited and maybe even slip through the cracks. It is always so easy to come up with an excuse. "I'll do that Bible Study tomorrow." "I'll catch up on my devotions later." "I'm just too tired to pray right now." Do any of these things sound familiar? They certainly do to me! In between the hustle and bustle of the month of February I didn't have a lot of down time but when I did, I didn't prioritize my time well.

I woke up yesterday just not feeling right. I felt like something was missing. It is difficult to describe the feeling but it was almost as if I was craving something. And then it hit me... I was craving God's Word. I was craving some quality "me" time with the Lord. I had denied myself this important time and totally taken it for granted when I found myself tired or overwhelmed. I still prayed daily and read my devotions here and there but I had gotten out of the routine of my Bible Study and my "God tank" was running pretty close to empty!

I don't ever want to feel too busy for God but I understand that life happens and sometimes our schedules get hectic but as women and wives, we need to be a leader and a model for how to keep our priorities straight. We can say that we put God first but our actions speak much louder than our words. We need to show God that we put Him first and then everything else will fall into place.

L-O-V-E

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres".

~ 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 ~

Though it is often clouded by flower deliveries, candies, and Hallmark cards, Valentine's Day is a wonderful and sweet day to celebrate the one you love. It is fun to go and get a little gift for your hubby or beau but when we dig a little deeper we realize that Valentine's Day is more than just chocolate covered strawberries... it's a day to really celebrate love.

Our verse for the day is one that is known to many but applied by few. This verse was read at our wedding because we truly believe in these words and in the message that God is teaching us. This beautiful description of what love looks like is an amazing example of what God's love looks like. He is patient, He is kind, He is slow to anger, He is the Truth, He protects us, He is our Hope. What a remarkable model we have to look for what love truly looks like.

To love someone is hard. To put your trust in someone and to lay your heart and feelings in the hands of another can be challenging but within a marriage it is necessary and, ultimately, a truly amazing experience. When I first met my hubby I knew he was like no other... he was sincere, honest, and passionate about his faith and he was the upmost southern gentleman, which totally scored him major points but there was something else and the more I got to know him, the more I realized what a Godly man he really is. Now... my hubby is not perfect by any means but he has to be the most patient, the most forgiving, and the most selfless person that I've ever met and each day he is my "earthly" reminder of what love is and what love looks like.

My relationship with God is clearly on a whole other overwhelming level but I am so thankful and so fortunate to have my hubby show me what love is each and every day. We are blessed to know His Word and to have such an incredible guide to model our marriage after and though it is not always sunshine and roses, it is ours and it is our love.

So go celebrate a lovely Valentine's Day with that handsome man of yours but remember that every day should be a special day and every day is a new day to celebrate the love you share.

The Sounds of Silence

Ladies... we like to talk. A lot. It's one of those things that we do best. Am I right? I know I love to talk! I love having friends that I'm able to meet for coffee, or call on the phone, and a mom that calls me routinely on her way to work each morning. It's truly a blessing to have loved ones that you know you can count on for a good chat. As great as words can be though, words also have a time and place. Sometimes it is best to put our words to rest. That time is when we are called upon to listen. Whether we are being called to listen to God or our hubby needs our undivided attention, listening is an important art for any relationship.

Yes, I called listening an art because I believe it takes time to grow into being a reliable listener. Listening is hard and can be a challenge. We don't always want to listen to what God may be telling us to do... I mean, sometimes we have our own plans, right? Ha! Wrong! At the end of a long day, the last thing we may want to do is listen to our hubby tell us about his long day. Hello? Isn't it all about "me"? Wait... no! Listening is all about give and take. My hubby and I are still working on perfecting this technique but we're totally fine with that. We all have a tendency to be selfish or interrupt or come up with a million excuses why we don't want to listen but listening is an imperative piece to this puzzle that we call marriage.

Yes, I just called marriage a puzzle. Isn't it though? Aren't we constantly trying to put the pieces together until we have a completed picture? My hubby and I aim to work towards completing our puzzle and I truly feel that each day we are together, our puzzle grows more complete. We are growing, we are changing, and we are aiming to make all the pieces fit together. In order to continue to complete our puzzle we need to have a solid foundation with God so that He can continue to guide us and coach us.

Yes, I just called God a coach. That's who I go to to learn valuable tools and lessons. That's who I rely on for encouragement and perseverance. That's who I go to for reassurance and answers. God coaches us through life and His Word is our game plan but we can't do what we're made to do if we don't take the time to really listen to Him. Wouldn't it be great if God just came down and had a quick chit chat with us? Life would probably be so much easier if we just went to Starbucks and God was able to tell us exactly what He wants us to do with our lives and what His plan is for us. But what would we be learning if that's how it all worked? We need to go to Him personally! He so craves a relationship with us and He wants us to seek Him!

Over the holidays my hubby and I had an uncomfortable visit we needed to make. We were a mix of emotions. We were trying to stay positive but feelings of dread, negativity, and hurt feelings started to seep in. We prayed and prayed and prayed for our sour feelings to just go away. I prayed and prayed and prayed for a way to get out of this visit and for the Lord and my hubby to forgive me for bailing out. Some of these things that I was praying for were selfish and definitely not what God was leading me to do. My stomach was literally in knots in the days leading up to this visit. The day that we were supposed to head out, I woke up super early in the morning. I could not fall back asleep and it was too early to peel myself out of bed so I just laid in bed, closed my eyes, and started praying. I was so overwhelmed with emotions and prayer that I honestly can't even remember what exactly I was praying for. I was enjoying this quiet time with God during the early, peaceful morning and that's when it hit me. In those moments of silence it was like the Lord just leaned over me and whispered, "Hannah, just do it." Sounds like a Nike commercial but it was all I needed to hear and it was all God wanted me to do. I had to get over my selfish doubts and just go with it and trust what the Lord was commanding me to do. We need to trust the Lord and listen to Him! We need to stop worrying what others think and we need to be confident in the fact that we have the Lord as our coach, cheering us on and supporting us.

Ladies... silence is golden and such a valuable tool! In silence we can listen to our loved ones but most importantly we can listen to God. What can you hear when you really stop and listen? What is He telling you to do? What is He leading you to do?

Be still. Be trusting. Be silent.

The Power of Prayer

Being a Biblical wife comes with some pretty awesome advantages and responsibilities. My hubby and I have not been married long but I learned early on that prayer is an important aspect of marriage. We pray together daily and seek His Word together but it is during my time alone with God that I look forward to the most. This is my time to bring everything to God and to pray for my husband.

As a wife, prayer is one of the most important things that we can do for our hubby's. This is not only a necessary responsibility but a privilege. God wants us to seek Him. He wants us to come to Him with our desires, our praises, our wants, our struggles and prayer is an amazing way to humbly connect with God. Through prayer we are lifting up our hubby and the results are positive for him, us, and our marriages.

It is so important to let the Lord lead your marriage. That is my number one prayer when it comes to praying for my hubby and our marriage! I pray that we always remember who is in charge and that we continue to choose to leave our marriage to His care.

Prayer is such an intimate way to connect with God and to deepen our relationships with Him. By having a strong prayer based relationship with the Lord, our relationship with our hubby's can only continue to grow and thrive. Praying for your hubby may not always be easy but it should always be a priority. Think about the role that you desire your hubby to fulfill. Being a leader, being strong in his faith, being a hard worker, etc,... these are all important things to pray about for your hubby.

And ladies, your hubby's should be lifting you up through prayer too! It is a wonderful, overwhelming feeling that I know I have someone I can rely on to go to God on my behalf. It is amazingly awesome to pray together but it is also so awesome to have that one on one time with God.

Happy Wife, Happy Life

There are so many struggles and battles that we are all facing each and every day. The daily stresses that we go through with our families can be stressful, trying, frustrating, and just plain exhausting. Whether we're dealing with health issues, finances, family matters, work problems, etc,.., these things can begin to take a toll on our marriages and family life. As wives, it can be difficult to stay strong and supportive during times like this but I truly believe in the power of prayer and staying positive.

This can be a difficult thing to do. It's hard to see things in a positive light when stressful circumstances seem to consume you but that's half the battle. Yes, there are bumps in the road that happen to all of us. The loss of a job, the loss of money, the loss of a loved one.. these are all things that can consume us and lead us towards feelings of bitterness, resentment, or anger. But there is something that we have that we will never lose. Something bigger than anything we can fathom. God's love! When the hubs and I are facing a difficult time, I always pray for Him to remind me how blessed we are in other ways. I pray for Him to show us what lesson He is teaching us. I pray for Him to continue to protect us and guide us. I try so hard to put my entire trust in God and pass my burden of worries over to Him.

What an amazing thing it is to be able to go to God and just lay it all out there. He takes that burden and lifts it from us and our families. One thing I have learned as a wife is to not take out my worries and stresses on my hubby and in return he does the same. Stressing each other out and getting one another worked up over a situation does nothing but cause more stress and it allows a crack in the marriage foundation to begin breaking. We have made it a point to pray together when we face a big decision and we always try to keep our lives in perspective.

Next time you and your hubby are facing a tough choice or going through difficult circumstances, take on your wifely duty and stay positive! Think of those things that are pure and noble and remember to be a woman of God. It's natural to go through up's and down's in life. When the hubs gets frustrated about something, I always to keep things in perspective. I remind of him of the roof over our heads, the food in our fridge, and the good health that we have. I knew I was rubbing off when my hubby looked over at me earlier today and said, "We have been truly blessed". I just smiled :)

Life can be hard and at times all we want to do is just hide away and not deal with it but in the scheme of things we have to look at the big picture and put our entire trust in the Lord and trust His guidance. He would not give us anything that we could not handle and He would not do anything that would harm us. It's easier to say these things than to constantly practice them but ladies, let's keep those thoughts positive and be a positive influence for our sweet, sweet, hubbies! Happy wife, happy life!

What A Girl Needs

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

As women and wives, we have busy days full of never-ending "to do" lists. In the midst of those long days, when you feel like you need an IV of non-stop caffeine, we let our bodies slip. We don't sleep long enough. We skip our workouts. We opt for takeout on the drive home. We forsake our time in God's Word. We wear our bodies down to the point of exhaustion. But for what? Why in the world do we do this to ourselves? Yes... jobs are important. Yes... errands and chores are important. But how can we expect our bodies to continue to rev up when our tanks are constantly empty of fuel?

Leading a healthy lifestyle is essential for us and our families. Of course the results of living healthily can be rewarding; glowing skin, toned tummies, great hair, bright eyes, less wrinkles, etc,.. (Sidenote: if you fit the above description, I would love to meet you, ha!) but the most sincere reason for our healthy lives should not be for ourselves but for God. It is very clear that we are to admire our bodies as a temple from God. We should not view our bodies as our own but as a gift that is from Him. Wow! What an amazing and overwhelming concept to truly wrap our minds around! Our body is a temple from God. Our bodies were so uniquely designed by God. We are truly a vision of His work.

As we enter into the New Year, there are several of us gals that have probably made resolutions and goals for 2012. Let's make one of those goals to not just provide a healthy environment for our beloved families but to make a conscious effort, each and every day, to honor our bodies and to treat them as a gift from God. I cannot even begin to think how many times I have taken my health for granted. I pick at myself a lot! I mean, come on ladies... let's get real. We want to have Jennifer Aniston's arms or Carrie Underwood's legs. There are some beautiful women who grace the covers of magazines who make me a lil' green with envy. I'll go to the gym determined to have a "6 pack" in a week but I only seem to set myself up for disappointment. Not just because that goal is impossible in that short of time but because I'm doing it for the wrong reason. I don't usually grab my gym bag thinking, "Alright God, this workout is for you!" But what if we did have that mindset? What if that was our approach to working out, cooking meals, taking care of our hair, our skin? Each time we choose to just crawl into bed with that makeup still sitting on our tired faces, we're choosing to not rinse the worries of the day away. We're choosing to let the day's stresses stay with us overnight and we're not taking care of one of the most essential parts of our bodies.

I believe that each and every girl should have a few routines that they grow into and change, according to their lifestyle; a prayer routine, a reading routine, a sleep routine, a skin routine, a workout routine, and a meal routine. It's important to make room for these routines in your daily life.

I combined my first two routines together because I usually spend time in prayer throughout my reading/devotion time. I think it is oh so important, as wives and women, to have that quiet, alone time with God as some point throughout our day. I try to do mine first thing in the mornings. Now that isn't going to work with everyone. You may have different job hours or kids to rush off to school but any time with God is time well spent! It is our duty, as wives, to pray for our husbands and our families daily and to continue to grow in our relationship with the Lord. I am so grateful for finding a couple of different devotions and Bible studies that have spoken to me and allowed me the opportunity to dive deeper into His Word. Find what works for you and just enjoy your time with God each day! It is such a blessing!

3) Sleep Routine
I'm pretty sure sleep is the first thing that gets overlooked when our lives grow hectic. Whether it's kids, work, or just spreading yourself too thin, we've all been there! I have learned over the past couple of years that sleep is essential in staying refreshed, alert, and healthy. There was a time when I was working three jobs all at once. I was finishing up one, starting another, and was working part time at a different place. Sleep was out the window! I was always tired, I wasn't eating well, I was grumpy, and I ran my body into the ground and literally made myself sick. Something had to give. I was trying to fit way too many things into a 24 hour day and please way too many people. I wasn't taking care of myself and making myself a priority. I'm sure we've all read or heard that 8 hours is the recommended amount of sleep but ultimately ladies, you know what your bodies need. You may crave less or you may crave more. Point is... sleep and enjoy it! Turn off those cell phones, TV's, computers and make your bed an oasis.

4) Skin Routine
If you're like me, your skin can always tell the world what kind of week you've had. Whether I'm stressed, tired, dehydrated, or completely healthy and refreshed, my skin is the first to either reap the rewards or the first to suffer. Somewhere between my busy college and post college years to now, I have developed a skin care routine that finally seems to work for me. It is so important for us to take care of our skin! It is a delicate and fragile gift from God and a part of our bodies that tends to get overlooked. Sure, there are crazy creams and ointments out there but there's really no need to spend a large amount of money on your skin. Find what works for you and your skin type and develop a morning and evening skin care routine that fits your schedule. Our bodies are a representation of God. Your skin is one of the first things that others notice about you and while no, one should never judge based on looks, we should take enough pride in our bodies and take care of our precious gift.

5) Workout Routine
Ah, exercise. You either love it or you hate it. I am certainly no expert in this department but I do know that hitting the gym or going for a jog has major benefits. Not only does it help us "tone it up" but it increases blood flow, keeps our heart strong, strengthens our mind, and keeps us disciplined by sticking to a regiment. We all have at least 30 minutes a day to do a little something, something... am I right? ;) We may need to peel our booties from the TV or shut down Facebook but hey, this sacrifice is a great way to honor and maintain the body that has been given to us. Personally, I'm not huge fan of working out and it wasn't something I really had to do until a few years ago. I grew up dancing 6-7 days a week, for hours at a time. Eventually, after college, my dance schedule lightened up and I had to find other ways to keep moving. I like to switch things up a bit and keep my body guessing. One day I may be on the treadmill and the next day doing crazy stretches on a yoga mat. There are so many options! Zumba, Pilates, Pure Barre... we can totally keep our workouts exciting. And... it's lots of fun to get your hubby in on the action! It's a great way to get out and about with your man!

6) Meal Routine
My final "routine" that ties all of this together is fueling your body with what it truly needs. I so wish we lived in a world where ice cream, pizza, and cheeseburgers were considered healthy but... we don't! While those things are fine, in moderation, it is up to us to provide yummy and nutritious meals for our families. We live such busy lives and sometimes it is a lot easier to order carryout from your local China Hut but we need to concentrate on what we can offer at home. Depending on your schedule, come up with a few nights a week where you can cook at home. Make meals ahead of time. Plan your meals... it's fun, easy, and makes your life a lot less stressful in the long run. Use a CrockPot. It's important to find a routine that works for you and to provide the proper fuel that you body craves.

Our God is such a mighty God and it is wonderfully overwhelming to think He created my body especially for me. He made every single part of me; my heart, my mind, my skin, my hair, my eyes. What a beautiful gift that we have been given! The only way that I can repay God for this outstanding gift is by praising Him daily and to make an effort to take care of this precious gift. When I think about the ultimate sacrifice that He made for us, the small amount of time that I spend on polishing my body is just a tiny way to say, "thank you, Lord"!

Fa La La La La...

"I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you".
~1 Corinthians 11:2~

The holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year. Christmas carols playing everywhere we go, the smell of cinnamon, fresh baked goodies, and young children full of excitement. It is a special time of year and a time that calls for family and tradition.

This Christmas holiday will be mine and my hubby's fifth holiday together and our third as a married couple. We are still settling into our own traditions and I'm sure once we have "mini-me's" running around, our traditions will continue to change and grow. For now, we are trying to find a mix of traditions from both of our families that works for us.

The most important tradition that we want to keep alive is the acknowledgment of what Christmas is all about. I love the saying, "Jesus is the reason for the season". It rhymes, it looks cute on a wreath, and it's the absolute truth! Jesus should be the center of our lives everyday but especially at this time of the year. It should be all about Him... it is His birthday after all ;) We hope and pray that we, someday, pass along this lesson to our children just as our parents instilled this truth in us. For us, important traditions that revolve around Jesus are the reading of the Christmas story on Christmas morning and a candlelit service at church, Christmas Eve.

Other fun traditions that our families passed on to us include the reading of "Twas the Night Before Christmas", preparing a platter of cookies and fudge for Santa, the sprinkling of Reindeer food on the front lawn, and of course, the viewing of "A Christmas Story" at some point during the 24 hour marathon.

I cannot wait to see how our traditions continue to change as we get older, our families grow, and time passes by. Christmas is such a magical and beautiful time of year and is a time of reflection and creating memories with family and loved ones. My prayer for my family and friends, this Christmas, is that we all have a chance to take a step back from the hustle and bustle and remember what this season is about and to really cherish our time and traditions with each other. May we all relish in old traditions and create new traditions as well.

That's Life

"If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault; just between the two of you. If he listens yo you, you have won your brother over."
~ Matthew 18:15 ~

We've all been through it. It's uncomfortable, hurtful, painful, and sometimes unavoidable. It is a part of life. Conflict and confrontation. It doesn't matter what side of the conflict that you're on, it is a difficult situation. A marriage opens endless opportunities for conflict and endless possibilities to allow Satan to work his way in between you and your hubby. My hubby and I have not been married for long but what we've learned so far is that speaking truthfully, openly, and honestly will get you far. As long as we do so with love!

"Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the Head, that is, Christ."
~ Ephesians 4:15 ~

Communication is vital in a successful marriage. It is important to build a relationship based on trust and respect. These two things can be easily lost if we do not communicate with our hubby in an encouraging and motivating way. My upmost desire for my marriage is to represent God and to grow into a Proverbs 31 wife. We want our husbands to have "full confidence" in us. We want to bring our hubby "good, not harm, all the days" of our lives. We need to "speak with wisdom". "Faithful instruction is on her tongue" {Proverbs 31:11,26}.

If our marriages were absolutely perfect, what would be the joy of marriage? The first step, for me, is not to have a negative outlook on conflict. My hubby and I choose to use our disagreements as learning and growing opportunities. How are we to grow in our marriage if we choose not to grow? Conflict and confrontation is hard for anyone but God does not give us anything that we cannot handle. My second step, before I choose to bring something up, is to consider whether or not this is a conversation that will truly benefit our relationship. I mean, ladies... can you imagine if we brought up every single, little, teeny, tiny thing to our hubby? Can you imagine if our hubby brought up every single, little, teeny, tiny thing to us? We would be at it every day. There are some things that we simply just need to "let go" of. Know what I'm saying? ;)

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yoursleves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others."
~Philippians 2:3-4 ~

If there is a topic that I feel strongly about, I choose to go to my hubby but only if I feel that it is something that will help us both. My third step is planning out exactly what I want to say and how I want to say it. I am a firm believer in thinking before you speak and though I am not perfect at this, I try to live this out daily. I practice what I want to say and go to His Word for prayer and clarity. My hubby and I use God's Word as our "go to" guide on how to handle certain situations, deal with relationships, and get through conflict. We try to use it in a correct manner and keep it in sync with what God truly intended and not abuse and manipulate His Words to benefit ourselves. The Bible is such a wonderful gift and is a tool that we often neglect when we need it most. It is a faithful source for teaching, guidance, correction, and growth.

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
~ 2 Timothy 3:16-17~

"He who guards his mouth and tongue keeps himself from calamity."
~Proverbs 21:23 ~

My final step, during a conflict, is to be patient. Listen, be kind, have an open heart, be gracious, and offer patience. Marriage is all about growth and each day we are constantly growing in our relationship with God and in our marriages. As wives, we cannot try to change our hubby. That is not our role... that is God's role!

Disagreements are going to happen. That is the reality of the world that we live in but how we choose to handle those situations is up to us. It doesn't matter if our conflict is with our spouse, an in -law, a brother, a friend, a co-worker... we choose how we approach someone and we choose how we react. Not everyone is going to like what we believe, or say, or do. And that's okay. Different views, different opinions... these are all times to represent His Light and truly live for Him. Obey His teachings and His commands. His judgement is the only judgement that matters. As long as we speak with truth, love, and for the good of others and listen with open ears and hearts, we are well on our way to being Proverbs 31 wives. Easier said than done, I know!

An important and imperative part of dealing with conflict and confrontation is forgiveness. There are so many great and beautiful rewards that come with genuine forgiveness and it is a feeling that is almost euphoric. The weight that is lifted from your heart when forgiveness seeps in and consumes you is something that only God can do. It is a work far too great for us to do alone. In order to truly move on and move forward in a relationship, forgiveness must take place. Pray for God to work on your heart and to bring you to a place full of love and joy instead of anger and aggression. Forgiving can be tough. When you've been hurt it is difficult to push those feelings aside and just trudge on. It takes time, and that's okay. There is no time frame on forgiveness. It can be hard but ladies... take it from me... forgive whomever needs to be forgiven. Bitterness is not an attractive accessory! Forgiveness changes our hearts and changes us. Whether it's your hubby, a family member, a friend... forgive. It makes us a much more positive wife and keeps our hearts open for His work.

"Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."
~Colossians 3:13~

I want to leave you with my absolute favorite verse from the Bible. It is so perfect for any situation that deals with a troublesome situation. I so try to live by this each day:

"Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones."
~Proverbs 16:24~

So next time that sweet hubby (or anyone for that matter!) of yours does something that doesn't set right with you, take a moment and think about your apporach. Ask yourself: Is this a growth opportunity? What words do I need to say? Is this going to benefit our relationship? Pray and ask God to help guide you with the most helpful and healing words. And don't forget... be patient with that man of yours!

You Want Me to What?

"Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything."
~Ephesians 5:21-24~

Today's verse can be a little scary... am I right ladies? After B and I were engaged I did a lot of reading on how to be the perfect wife. B is probably wondering where all those books are, haha ;) Any way... I did a lot of reading on a lot of subjects: how to pray for my husband, how to pray for my marriage, how to cook a great meal, how to be a fun wife, how to support my husband, how to help my husband, how to submit to my husband. Wait... what? Submit? Anytime I read over the word submit I would skip to the next chapter; anything to get past having to "submit" to my husband. In church and in Bible studies, we read through Ephesians and try to learn all the wonderful lessons that are being taught but when I read through it as an engaged woman, it hit a little close to home and in a very different way.When I read through our verse for today, this what I saw:

"..... Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands......For the husband is the head of the wife......."

I was reading with a closed mind and with a closed heart. I was not being open to what God was teaching me. I had always been an independent person and could (correction... can) be a stubborn person. I had my way of doing things. I had my own routine. I got up at a certain time, I did my laundry certain days of the week, I liked to pray a certain way, I liked to eat ice cream out of the carton, I liked to cook certain meals. You get the picture. When you're single and living life on your own, you grow accustomed to doing things your way. I knew what I was signing up for when I said "YES" to B's marriage proposal but, submitting to someone? Ummm... excuse me? I was not going to be a doormat. I was not going to let someone "lead" me anywhere. I could "lead" myself. Right?... WRONG! God does not want his daughters to be doormats. He wants us to be strong, capable women who can help their men out in our day to day lives. The more I went back and read through today's verse, the more I prayed. I asked God to show me what submission looked like and asked God to make me comfortable with stepping into this role of being a wife. What did I learn? I learned that being submissive means letting go of my ego and some of my crazy control habits. {Sidenote: I am still working on this! There is a small part of me that is slightly Type A!} It means letting my husband fulfill his role as being a leader in our home and supporting him in this important role. Being submissive means taking a step back and being you hubby's partner. We were after all created to be a "helpmate". What's that saying?... Behind every great man is an even greater woman. True, true but I was actually going for the following verse ;)

"The Lord God said,"It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him"... So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman', for she was taken out of man."
~Genesis 2:18, 21-23~

God created us specifically for that reason... to help out our hubby. It is our role as modern wives to help our sweeties by holding them accountable as spiritual leaders, help them continue their walk in God's light, and help them take us out on fabulous dates! Submitting ain't such a bad thing, ladies. It's a high calling and a high honor from our Father. Like myself, many women automatically assume submitting means letting your spouse do anything and everything they want and we just nod and smile. Once I opened up my heart, my mind, and my eyes, I learned it is not a negative word. It's actually a pretty special role. It is up to us Christian gals to trust what God says and to trust this role that he has provided for us to fulfill. God did not create us to be doormats for our hubby. He created us to be their partner for this crazy thing called life! So go give that handsome man of yours a big ol' hug and smooch and see what you can do to help your man out today.

Being a Biblical Wife in a Modern World

I am super excited to begin writing a weekly blog entry dealing with all things we Christian gals struggle with as wives. How do we maintain our Biblical faith and values while living in this modern world? It's tough and challenging but there are ways for us to prosper.

Every Monday morning I'll deal with a different topic that I currently struggle with or have struggled with in the past. I'm a pretty straight forward person and don't have too much to hide. I plan on letting it all hang out... well, most of it ;)

I am not an expert on marriage or being a wife. My hubby and I have only been married a little over 2 1/2 years and I still have a lot to learn. I am still growing in my faith and am constantly learning new things about God and His Word. That's the main reason for these new, weekly posts; to share what I'm going through in my marriage and what I'm going through as a young, Christian wife. I know there are probably several other ladies who go though the same things I do so I thought, "Hmm... I should blog about this"! There will Bible verses, encouraging quotes, and hopefully lots of other study tools to help us grow as young women who walk with Christ. I hope y'all stop by and take a glance and please, please, please leave a comment and/or email me! I'm hoping this brings lots of fellowship for us modern women.
